“Stay” choreography started with music. After listening to Rihanna’s song several times as it was played on the radio, we knew we wanted to dance to it. We simply came to rehearse, and through improvisation, we had the choreography ready in a matter of few hours. This is a typical process for us. There are generally no preconceived ideas. We just let the music move us into the choreography. Our best work is usually created using this process. Still, this was our official first step moving outside of the ballroom realm and introducing modern and contemporary vocabulary. Our training still clearly shined through, but we used the technique without all traditions of ballroom, such as gender roles. Subsequently, we chose an androgynous look with less emphasis on assigning roles of lead and follow. Since the film was created, “Stay” has been performed live in many venues including Harvest Chicago Contemporary Dance Festival on Sept. 26, 2014.
